This is the eagerly awaited naked street version of the almighty new Yamaha R1, The MT-10 . The following comments come from a test ride. After the first 50km ride on the bike it was clear to me that the MT-10 is so much more than just a naked R1. The upright riding position, business class leg room and surprisingly good wind protection make it a fantastic all-round machine. It’s so easy to enjoy the beauty that is the crossplane big-bang motor – it’s a masterpiece of an engine. Of course the bike is unreasonably fast, with a midrange that could shift tectonic plates. The crossplane crankshaft, inline four-cylinder, 998cc R1 engine has been detuned from its 153kW peak down to somewhere around 120 to make it more useful in an un-faired bike. The power is the same as BMW’s S1000R, but it seems to have a better spread of torque. It’s a MotoGP-esque sound that pushes out that power combined with 111Nm of tar-tearing torque and makes for a thrilling ride. It feels perhaps a little less racey than the competitors I have previously tested, but that actually works in its favour. It feels more user-friendly and suited to everyday real world riding – where comfort and ease of use are essential.Overall the MT-10 offers excellent handling and a devastating engine. If you want to wheelie everywhere, it will do it, in almost every gear. Or, if it’s a good all-rounder you are looking to live with, it will do the practical motorcycle thing too. The MT-10 is the best of both worlds: a user friendly R1, that is able to switch frame of mind as quickly as you and go from cool, calm, relaxed to hooligan on the loose!
