A mountain pass, the largest southern earth dam and NZ's highest mountain.
Mount Cook is an easy return trip in one day from Queenstown or Cromwell.
From Queenstown you can go via the Crown Range and Wanaka using SH8A to get on to SH8, or via Cromwell and Highlands Motosport Park on SH6, then use SH8B to get on to SH8.
Once on SH8 head North to Omarama via the Lindis Pass. Watch for tourists pulling in or out at the summit lookout, and don't be trapped by going too fast on the Omarama Straights.
At Omarama turn right into SH83 and continue about 40km to the Aviemore Dam lookout. Cross over the dam and turn left on to Te Akatarawa Rd. Follow this with Lake Aviemore on your left and cross the Benmore Dam. Return to Omarama via Loch Laird Rd and SH83. At Omarama turn right into SH8 to resume your journey to Mount Cook.
Fuel available at Omarama or a Z station 30km further on at Twizel - take the second entrance to Twizel.
About 8.5km past Twizel, the turn off to Mount Cook appears on your left - SH80. Follow to the end.
Additionally you can explore the canal roads, take a side trip into Lake Ohau, or carry on SH 8 to the Lake Pukaki lookout or on to Lake Tekapo.
